Arkansas Blues By Mike Dollins The Mississippi River is the state line between Arkansas and Mississippi. The infamous Blues Highway 49 crosses the Mississippi River, and winds up in the historic blues city of Helena, Arkansas home to King Biscuit Floor Power Blues KFFA Radio, and the King Biscuit Blues Festival. The reason Arkansas didn’t get on the blues map back in the turn of the 20th century, is the Smithsonian Institute in their quest to record American Folk Music starting in 1902, headed down the Application trail, wound up in Tennessee and then on down Mississippi to New Orleans. They never crossed the Mississippi River, heading westward, and thus Kansas City Blues, St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Blues, Oakland Bay Blues, San Francisco Blues, Seattle Blues and Arkansas Blues didn’t make the grade. From there anyone trying to make a buck on blues starts at Clarksdale, stops in Memphis, and winds up in Chicago. .
King Biscuit is the first name in blues. The King Biscuit Time radio show was founded in 1941 with the first ever live broadcast of blues music and the daily programming of Sonny Boy Williamson, Pinetop Perkins, Robert Lockwood Jr. and other blues legends throughout the delta. The program is still broadcast each weekday on KFFA in Helena, Arkansas. With more than 14,000 broadcasts, King Biscuit Time has had an influence on several generations of blues, rock, and pop trend setters
The Delta Cultural Center, located in historic downtown Helena, Arkansas, is a museum dedicated to the history of the Arkansas Delta. The museum interprets the history of the Delta through exhibits, educational programs, annual events, and guided tours. Come in and experience what the Delta has to offer. Currently the museum is hosting an exhibit on the delta blues, “Helena: Main Street of the Blues” gives a unique perspective of the delta’s rich blues music history. The Arkansas Delta region's heritage is steeped in rich sights, sounds, people and events. It is the mission of the Delta Cultural Center to preserve, interpret and present the cultural heritage of this legendary 27-county region. From its blues music to the mighty river that runs through it, the Delta story unfolds within this unique Helena landmark
Organization of Lower Hudson Valley and kindred musicians
The Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival is presented by the Sonny Boy Blues Society, a 501 c 3 organization. Established to present and preserve the cultural heritage of the Delta the Society works year round on educational programs, live music events, the festival and programs that preserve the heritage of the blues. The Sonny Boy Blues Society (SBBS) was formed in 1987, by many of the people that were responsible for organizing the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival. The group named themselves after Sonny Boy Williamson, one of the primary performers on Arkansas Blues Time radio show on KFFA radio. Sonny Boy's harp playing and singing is a major influence on many of the performers appearing at the ABHF.
